About the event
Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Ollie “Basie-O” Elder’s musical education began on the violin at age eleven. A year or two after being on violin Ollie switched to the viola. However, it was the sound of the double bass that spoke to him. Basie-O performed and recorded with the now deceased David Ornette Cherry for 40 years. It was with Cherry where Basie-O received his education in the realm of Avant Garde Jazz. Basie-O recorded on several of Cherry’s albums including The Continual, End Of A Century and Ensemble For Improvisors Live in Los Angeles. End of a Century was awarded the 2003 ASCAP- Chamber Music America Award for adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music.
As a composer, producer, and recording engineer Basie-O co-wrote, produced and performed bass on the album Back In Love by Fleming Robinson. Basie-O can be heard on The album Thug Healer 2 by poet Taalam Acey, Another…
